Women and Youth Economic Empowerment

SUMASESU has been implementing the Women and Youth Economic Empowerment (MWYEE) project since October 2018. It is a 7-years project implemented in phases, with phase one beginning in October 2018 and ending in June 2021, and phase two beginning in June 2021 and ending in June 2024. 

The project is funded by Bread for the World (BftW), and it targets marginalized community members while ward land tribunals, local radio listeners, other household members, and local government leaders as indirect participants making a total of 20,515 participants. MWYEE is implemented in 9 wards of Makete District in the 13 villages ofUsungilo, Makangalawe, Unenamwa, Ilevelo, Ndulamo, Idende, Ugabwa, Kitula, Ihela, Ipepo, Igolwa, Nkunga, and Kidope. The project’s main focus is on empowering women and youth through their economic group networks to have land rights and obtain their Certificate of Customary Rights of Occupancy (CCRO), which will allow them to control, manage, and use land for economic generation activities, the program also focuses on increasing awareness in the 13 project villages about resilience to natural disasters and the effects of climate change.

EPIC PHASE 2

EpiC executive summary

SUMASESU – EpiC project annual report which entails activities implemented in fiscal year 2022, EpiC project in Makete DC has managed to reach Key Population (KPs) and their networks with HIV prevention package of services to KPs, this package involve combination of interventions of Social behavioral change and communication, Biomedical and Structural).

Peer educators offered health education session in FSW hangouts, condom and HVIST distribution to FSW networks and partners of FSW then clients linked to community health care worker for integrated HTS services.

SUMASESU managed to engage a total of 10 FSW Peer Educators for hotspot mapping a and validation in FY22. Total 128 FSW hotspots were mapped as active hotspots in FY 22 where by 45 were new hotspots and 81 were old hence were validated. The overall hotspots had size estimation of 1683 FSWs.

Whereby a total 727 FSW and 235 PWPS were tested through mobile and index testing modality respectively. Whereby total of 69 clients were diagnosed HIV positive though mobile testing modality while 54 through index testing approach. Also 83 clients accessed HTS services through Enhanced peer outreach approach (EPOA) in which 13 clients were identified HIVpositive

Linkage for ART services were conducted to 67 clients out of 69 identified HIV POS through mobile testing with linkage rate of 97% out, also 50 clients out of 54 identified POS through index testing which is 93% linkage rate and all 13 (100%) of Client tested HIV POS through EPOA were linked to ART services in care and treatment.

Apart from the integrated HTS  services, other biomedical services rendered  were the different FP methods, of which, 474 clients were offered FP various commodities(136 Male condoms, 71 Injectables, 91 implants and 176 Pills) were offered Additionally  1547 clients were screened for STI and 1 client with signs and symptoms of STI  was referred to a health facility for STI treatment, Also 1577 clients were screened for GBV, Whereas 1 was the GBV survivors who experienced physical violence and referred for post GBV services. 

Furthermore, a total of 105,615 male condoms were distributed, whereby 23,653 male condoms were distributed by HCP to FSWs during outreaches and 81,959 male condoms were distributed by peer educators for prevention services.

 

 

Summary of Key Results

The following is the summary of key achievements for this reporting period by population type;

  • 1559 FSW were reached with SBCC education
  • 727 FSWs were tested and received their HIV results
  • 69 FSWs tested HIV positive
  • 67 HTS-POs FSWs were linked to care and treatment (Linkage rate of 97%)
  • 83 FSWs tested through EPOA approach
  • 13 FSWs tested HIV positive through EPOA approach
  • 13 FSWs tested positive through EPOA linked to care and treatment (Linkage rate of 100%)
  • 235 (100%) other at risk men and women elicited for index testing services were tested and received their HIVresults through index testing.
  • 54 other at risk men and women were tested positive through index testing modality
  • 50(93%) other at risk men and women identified through index testing were linked to care and treatment

Registered in 2004 with Reg; No so 12537 as a non-governmental organization. Got a certificate of compliance no; 00001486 under the Non-Governmental Organizations’ act no 24 of 2002 on the 27th November 2012.
